Solar Cooking

Solar cooking is not new, but there is an increasing awareness of it's advantages and benefits. There are numerous reasons to cook by this natural method.

Economical

For much of the worlds' population, where modern conveniences are lacking, solar cooking is more than a choice — it is a necessity.  But even those of us that have access to modern electric and gas appliances can appreciate the money-saving advantages of solar cooking.

  • The cost of a solar cooker can be as little as a few dollars, and of course, the energy is free.
  • Kitchens remain cool while food solar cooks outdoors. This reduces the load on air conditioners and refrigerators in summer months, saving fossil fuels (and lowering utility bills).

Healthy & Safe

Solar cooking has some siginificant advantages in terms of health and safety.

  • Smokeless - eliminates health and environmental issues regarding smoke.
  • Low Temperature - less chance of injury due to high temperatures.
  • No Electricity - no chance of injury due to electrical shock.
  • No gas or other fuel - eliminates concern over possible inhalation of poisonous gases.

Convenient

Solar cooking can be compared to cooking by "Crock Pot" in terms of low temperatures and extended cooking times.  They also can be used whereever sunlight is available.  Advantages include:

  • Cooking without constant attention.
  • Easier Cleanup - Pots used for solar cooking are easier to clean than they would be if used over a fire or on a hot stove.
  • Portable - allows for cooking in remote locations.

Environmentaly Responsible

In a world where we are increasingly concerned about man's impact on the environment, solar cooking has obvious advantages.

  • Conserves Natural Resources - Eliminates consumption of natural resources, other than the sun, that are being dangerously depleted, like wood, oil, and coal.
  • Polution-Free - Solar cookers release no smoke or other harmful substances into the atmosphere.
